چکیده

Mechanisms of quantum phase coherence heavily influence spectral and transport properties of weakly disordered normal conductors. Such effects are manifest in weak and strong localization effects, and characteristic fluctuation phenomena. Over the past thirty years, theoretical progress in elucidating the mechanisms of quantum phase coherence in weakly disordered structures has been substantial: By now a consistent theory of weakly interacting disordered structures has been developed (For a review, see e.g., Refs. [1–3]). At the same time, considerable experimental effort has been directed towards the exploration of the influence of phase coherence effects on the quasi-particle properties of disordered superconductors. Again, attempts to develop a consistent theory have enjoyed great success. By now a reliable theory of the weakly interacting superconducting system has been formulated. Yet, a complete description of the phenomenology of the disordered superconductor in the presence of strong interaction effects has yet to be established. The continuing developments and refinements of experimental techniques continue to present fresh challenges to theoretical investigations. On this background, the aim of these lecture notes is to selectively review the recent development of a quasi-classical field theoretic framework to describe phase coherence phenomena in disordered superconductors. This approach, which is motivated by the parallel formulation of the theory of the normal disordered system, presents average properties of the superconductor as a quantum field theory with an action of non-linear σ-model type. The limited scope of these lectures does not permit an extensive review the many applications of this technique. Instead, to illustrate the impact of quantum phase coherence phenomena on the quasi-particle properties of the disordered superconducting system, and the practical application of the field theoretic scheme, the final part of these notes will be devoted to a study of the magnetic impurity system.

Amorphous vortex glass phase in strongly disordered superconductors.

We introduce a model describing vortices in strongly disordered three-dimensional superconductors. The model focuses on the topological defects, i.e., dislocation lines, in an elastic description of the vortex lattice. The model is studied using Monte Carlo simulations, revealing a glass phase at low temperatures, separated by a continuous phase transition to the high temperature resistive vort...

On the Phase Behavior of Disordered Type-II Superconductors

A general phenomenology for phase behaviour in the mixed phase of disordered type-II superconductors is outlined. We propose that the “Bragg glass” phase generically transforms via two separate thermodynamic phase transitions into a disordered liquid on increasing the temperature. The first transition is into a glassy phase, topologically disordered at the largest length scales; current evidenc...

Charge and spin inhomogeneity as a key to the physics of the high Tc cuprates

We present a coherent scenario for the physics of cuprate superconductors, which is based on a chrge-driven inhomogeneity, i.e. the “stripe phase”. We show that spin and charge critical fluctuations near the stripe instability of strongly correlated electron systems provide an effective interaction between the quasiparticles, which is strongly momentum, frequency, temperature and doping depende...

Bogoliubov angle in electron-doped cuprate superconductors

Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the momentum dependence of the Bogoliubov angle in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied. By calculation of the ratio of the low energy quasiparticle spectra at positive and negative energies, it is shown that the Bogoliubov angle increases monotonically across the Fermi crossing point, suggesting a con...

Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-Tc Systems

A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-Tc type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature “Bragg glass” phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an ex...
